Review of Discovery Parks – Pambula Beach
If one were to design the ideal family holiday park, it would probably look suspiciously like Discovery Parks – Pambula Beach. It has that “something for everyone” quality, like a Swiss Army knife, but without the risk of accidentally slicing your thumb while trying to extract the corkscrew.
Upon arrival, the first thing I noticed was the blessed absence of dogs. Now, before anyone fires up the national canine defence hotline, let me explain: this dog-free policy creates an atmosphere of serenity normally reserved for meditation retreats or museums where the air conditioner hums louder than the visitors. It also means the local wildlife feels safe enough to step out and perform their daily cabaret.
And by wildlife, I mean birds. Lots of birds. Cockatoos wandering about like self-appointed park managers, brilliantly coloured parrots flitting around and observing you with the same scrutiny I reserve for baffling modern car dashboards. Without dogs chasing them off, the place is absolutely teeming with feathered residents, looking smugly pleased with themselves and their uninterrupted lifestyle.
If birds aren’t enough to tickle your naturalist fancy, the Eastern Grey Kangaroos certainly will. They share the park as though they’ve negotiated a time-share agreement with management. They are friendly, curious, and prone to hopping up and giving you a look that suggests they’re judging your choice of breakfast cereal. While it is tempting to feed them, the park displays helpful signage reminding you not to, unless, of course, you’d enjoy being greeted every morning by a kangaroo expecting a continental breakfast.
Now, onto the matter of caravanning. I travelled with friends who own a 24-foot caravan, which is roughly the size of a modest suburban bungalow. Yet, astonishingly, it slotted easily into its allocated site. The caravan sites here are spacious enough that parking becomes less like a tense marital test of communication and more like a leisurely shuffle into place. Even I managed it without muttering the traditional Anglo-Saxon phrases associated with jack-knifing the caravan around the neighbour’s awning ropes into caravan site pegged out by someone missing the first 600mm off their tape measure.
The park offers a raft of activities and facilities for the whole family—pools, playgrounds, various contraptions for children to fling themselves off—all very energetic and marvellous if you’re into that sort of thing.
But what really elevates the place is the staff. They are unfailingly friendly, helpful, and genuinely cheerful, the sort of people who can explain where the dump point is located without making you feel like you’ve made a series of poor life decisions. They keep the park immaculate and somehow maintain calm expressions even when guests (like myself) ask questions that are clearly answered on signage directly behind them.
And of course, there’s the beach—a proper surf beach, conveniently located just next door. It’s the kind of place where you can stroll straight from your caravan to the shoreline in minutes, pretending you’re in an advert for a lifestyle insurance company while hoping nobody saw you trip on a patch of soft sand.
All in all, Discovery Parks – Pambula Beach is a delightful fusion of wildlife sanctuary, family playground, and caravanning haven. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and occasionally surreal—particularly when a kangaroo pauses beside you as if to check you’ve properly levelled your van.
Would I return?
Absolutely. Provided the kangaroos don’t start demanding room service.
